Making Autonomous Nano-drones Smarter to Scale New Heights

TII ·

ARRC researchers in collaboration with the University of Bologna and ETH Zürich have developed a CNN-based AI deck to enable autonomous navigation of a 27g nano-drone in unknown environments. The CNN allows the drone to recognize and avoid obstacles using only an onboard camera, running 10x faster and using 10x less memory than previous versions. The demo also featured a swarm of nano-drones flying in formation using ultra-wideband communication. Why it matters: This advancement could significantly enhance the capabilities of nano-drones for applications such as disaster response, where quick and efficient intervention is crucial.

Climate Adaptation-Aware Flood Prediction for Coastal Cities Using Deep Learning

arXiv ·

Researchers have developed a CNN-based deep learning model for predicting coastal flooding in cities under various sea-level rise scenarios. The model utilizes a vision-based, low-resource DL framework and is trained on datasets from Abu Dhabi and San Francisco. Results show a 20% reduction in mean absolute error compared to existing methods, demonstrating potential for scalable coastal flood management.

Deep Vision-Based Framework for Coastal Flood Prediction Under Climate Change Impacts and Shoreline Adaptations

arXiv ·

This paper introduces a deep vision-based framework for predicting coastal floods under climate change, addressing the challenges of limited training data and high-dimensional output. The framework employs and compares various deep learning models, including a custom compact CNN architecture, against geostatistical and traditional machine learning methods. A new synthetic dataset of flood inundation maps for Abu Dhabi's coast is also provided to benchmark future models.

Early and Accurate Detection of Tomato Leaf Diseases Using TomFormer

arXiv ·

Researchers introduce TomFormer, a transformer-based model for accurate and early detection of tomato leaf diseases, with the goal of deployment on the Hello Stretch robot for real-time diagnosis. TomFormer combines a visual transformer and CNN, achieving state-of-the-art results on KUTomaDATA, PlantDoc, and PlantVillage datasets. KUTomaDATA was collected from a greenhouse in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Tomato Maturity Recognition with Convolutional Transformers

arXiv ·

This paper introduces a convolutional transformer model for classifying tomato maturity, along with a new UAE-sourced dataset, KUTomaData, for training segmentation and classification models. The model combines CNNs and transformers and was tested against two public datasets. Results showed state-of-the-art performance, outperforming existing methods by significant margins in mAP scores across all three datasets.

EchoCoTr: Estimation of the Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction from Spatiotemporal Echocardiography

arXiv ·

Researchers from MBZUAI have developed EchoCoTr, a novel spatiotemporal deep learning method for estimating left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) from echocardiograms. EchoCoTr combines CNNs and vision transformers to overcome the limitations of each when applied to medical video data. The method achieves state-of-the-art results on the EchoNet-Dynamic dataset, demonstrating improved accuracy compared to existing approaches, with code available on GitHub.

Designing the Architecture of a Convolutional Neural Network Automatically for Diabetic Retinopathy Diagnosis

arXiv ·

This paper introduces a method for automatically designing convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures tailored for diabetic retinopathy (DR) diagnosis using fundus images. The approach uses k-medoid clustering, PCA, and inter/intra-class variations to optimize CNN depth and width. Validated on datasets including a local Saudi dataset and Kaggle benchmarks, the custom-designed models outperform pre-trained CNNs with fewer parameters.
