A research paper by Dr. Reda Alami of the AI and Digital Science Research Center (AIDRC) at TII has been accepted for publication at the 14th Asian Conference on Machine Learning (ACML 2022). The paper addresses sequential decision-making under uncertainty in non-stationary environments, proposing a Bayesian Change-Point Detection with Thompson Sampling (Bayesian-CPD-TS) algorithm. The algorithm combines decision-making under uncertainty and sequential detection of abrupt changes. Why it matters: This recognition highlights the growing AI research capabilities within the UAE and its contribution to the global machine learning community.
MBZUAI researchers will present 20 papers at the 40th International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) in Honolulu. Visiting Associate Professor Tongliang Liu leads with seven publications, followed by Kun Zhang with six. One paper investigates semi-supervised learning vs. model-based methods for noisy data annotation in deep neural networks. Why it matters: The research addresses the critical issue of data quality and accessibility in machine learning, particularly for organizations with limited resources for data annotation.
This paper introduces Adaptive Entropy-aware Optimization (AEO), a new framework to tackle Multimodal Open-set Test-time Adaptation (MM-OSTTA). AEO uses Unknown-aware Adaptive Entropy Optimization (UAE) and Adaptive Modality Prediction Discrepancy Optimization (AMP) to distinguish unknown class samples during online adaptation by amplifying the entropy difference between known and unknown samples. The study establishes a new benchmark derived from existing datasets with five modalities and evaluates AEO's performance across various domain shift scenarios, demonstrating its effectiveness in long-term and continual MM-OSTTA settings.
Technology Innovation Institute's (TII) Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) is integrating machine learning (ML) techniques into signal processing to accelerate research. One project used convolutional neural networks to predict COVID-19 pneumonia from chest x-rays with 97.5% accuracy. DERC researchers also demonstrated that ML-based signal and image processing can retrieve up to 68% of text information from electromagnetic emanations. Why it matters: This adoption of ML for signal processing at TII highlights the potential for advanced AI techniques to enhance research and security applications in the UAE.
The paper introduces AlcLaM, an Arabic dialectal language model trained on 3.4M sentences from social media. AlcLaM expands the vocabulary and retrains a BERT-based model, using only 13GB of dialectal text. Despite the smaller training data, AlcLaM outperforms models like CAMeL, MARBERT, and ArBERT on various Arabic NLP tasks. Why it matters: AlcLaM offers a more efficient and accurate approach to Arabic NLP by focusing on dialectal Arabic, which is often underrepresented in existing models.
KAUST, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), will host the second edition of the MENA Machine Learning Winter School (MenaML) from January 24-29, 2026. The program will cover the latest developments in intelligent model engineering, AI for science, and high-efficiency computing technologies with representatives from 16 international institutions. 300 researchers will be selected from over 2,300 applicants to participate in the intensive academic program. Why it matters: The MenaML winter school strengthens KAUST's role as a regional hub for AI research and contributes to human capital development in AI across the MENA region.
The paper introduces Juhaina, a 9.24B parameter Arabic-English bilingual LLM trained with an 8,192 token context window. It identifies limitations in the Open Arabic LLM Leaderboard (OALL) and proposes a new benchmark, CamelEval, for more comprehensive evaluation. Juhaina outperforms models like Llama and Gemma in generating helpful Arabic responses and understanding cultural nuances. Why it matters: This culturally-aligned LLM and associated benchmark could significantly advance Arabic NLP and democratize AI access for Arabic speakers.
